Fireplace Safety: How to Keep Your Home Warm and Protected This Winter
Stephanie Pepiot

There’s nothing quite like relaxing by a warm fireplace during the colder months. But while fireplaces add comfort and charm to a home, they also come with risks if they aren’t used properly. At ISU Stephen B. Marvin Insurance Agency, we take fire safety seriously — and we want to help you enjoy your home safely all season long.

Here are a few key ways to make sure your fireplace is operating safely and efficiently:

  1. Schedule a Professional Inspection

Before lighting your first fire of the season, have your fireplace and chimney inspected by a certified professional. An annual cleaning helps remove soot, creosote buildup, and debris - all of which can increase your risk of a chimney fire.

  1. Burn the Right Fuel

Only use dry, seasoned firewood or approved fireplace logs. Burning trash, treated lumber, or other materials can release harmful chemicals and create excessive sparks or buildup in your chimney. Choosing the right fuel helps your fire burn cleaner and safer.

  1. Keep the Area Around the Fireplace Clear

Anything flammable, including furniture, blankets, décor, and holiday decorations, should be kept at least three feet away from the fireplace. This simple step significantly reduces the chance of accidental ignition.

  1. Always Use a Screen or Glass Door

A protective barrier prevents sparks from escaping and keeps pets and children at a safe distance. Screens and doors also help contain embers, which can pop unexpectedly as the fire burns.

  1. Fully Extinguish the Fire Before Bed or Leaving the House

Never leave a fire unattended. Make sure the flames and embers are completely out before you go to sleep or step out, even for a short time.

  1. Test Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Fireplace season is the perfect time to make sure your detectors are working properly. Replace batteries if needed and test the alarms monthly.

A warm home is a wonderful thing! With a few simple precautions, you can enjoy your fireplace with confidence. If you have questions about fire safety or want to review your homeowners insurance coverage, our team is always here to help.
